After an unusually warm start to October, a cold front is bringing a sharp change in weather, with frost, heavy rain and fresh snowfall expected in parts of the country.
Austria is preparing for a significant drop in temperatures as the summer-like weather finally comes to an end. Following several unusually mild days at the beginning of October, a cold front reached the country on Thursday, ushering in a colder and more wintry period.
The change will be felt most strongly in western Austria, where temperatures are expected to fall considerably over the coming days. In Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, temperatures could drop to around 2 degrees Celsius over the weekend. Heavy precipitation is also forecast, particularly on Sunday, with further snowfall possible at higher elevations.
Winter Sports Season Gets Underway
While those seeking warmer weather may already be thinking about travelling south, winter sports enthusiasts have reason to celebrate. The changing weather conditions are arriving just in time for the start of the ski season.
The Kitzsteinhorn ski resort is among the destinations preparing to welcome winter sports fans, with its new season officially opening on Saturday. The slopes are already ready for visitors, and the colder conditions could provide a promising start to the winter sports season.
Further snowfall in the mountains would offer an additional boost to ski resorts preparing for the weeks ahead.
Eastern Austria Enjoys a Brief Respite
The situation will initially remain somewhat milder in eastern Austria. Vienna and its surrounding areas can still expect daytime temperatures of up to 20 degrees Celsius over the weekend.
However, cooler mornings and evenings will make warmer clothing increasingly necessary, even if afternoons remain relatively pleasant.
This temporary reprieve is not expected to last long. From the middle of next week, temperatures are forecast to fall further in the eastern part of the country as the colder weather gradually spreads.
Winter Is Making Its Presence Felt
The sudden shift serves as a reminder that autumn is progressing rapidly and winter is approaching. After enjoying summer-like conditions just days ago, Austrians will need to prepare for colder temperatures, wet weather and the first signs of winter in the mountains.
For ski enthusiasts, the cold snap could hardly come at a better time. For everyone else, it is time to bring out the winter jackets, check the weather forecast and prepare for the season ahead.
